He become the elected chairman of Haildhar Union Parishad from 1967 to 1975. Even after independence, he was the chairman of Haildhar Union Parishad and chairman of Thana Parishad.

In 1970, “Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu” was elected a member of the provincial council from West Patia and Anwara in the general election. He was one of the reformers of the 1972 constitution. He was elected Member of the Provincial Council (MPA) in 1970. In that context, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury became a member of the Bangladesh People’s Assembly formed in 1972 and played a significant role in drafting the constitution of Bangladesh.
