1.1 Birth  “Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu” was born in the village of Anwara Haildhar. The time was May 1, 1945.


1.2 Father and Mother- His father’s name was Nuruzzaman Chowdhury, who was a lawyer by profession and was also a zamindar in his area. His mother’s name was Khorsheda Begum, who was a housewife. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu grew up behind the caress of his parents.


1.3 Education- He was a very talented student. His love for studies was different. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu graduated from Patia High School in 1958. Then in the same year he was admitted to the renowned and well-established Notre Dame College in Dhaka. 2.1 Marriage- He got married to Nur Nahar Zaman, the second daughter of the late Alhaj Sirajul Islam Chowdhury of Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong.


2.2 Children- He is the father of 3 sons and 4 daughters. His sons and daughters are – Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, Asifuzzaman Chowdhury, Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, Roxana Zaman Chowdhury, Afroza Zaman Chowdhury, Farhana Zaman Chowdhury and Nina Kawrajaki Zaman Chowdhury. This great leader was quite happy with his family. He always expressed his love and affection for his family. He did his best to do what a father needs to do. He fulfilled his role as an ideal father. He established his family by educating his children.




3.1 Entering politics- He loved politics from his youth. Patriotism seemed to be full in him. As a result, he was elected as a member of Dakshin Zila Chhatra League in 1958 while he was studying in Madhyamik. From this he entered politics.


3.2 Official beginning of politics- His love for politics doubled when he was young. So he thought that whatever he did in life, he would stay in politics. He joined the Awami League in 1967. From then on, the political career of “Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu” started permanently.


3.3 Political Positions- He changed into the elected chairman of Haildhar Union Parishad from 1967 to 1975. Even after independence, he turned into the chairman of Haildhar Union Parishad and chairman of Thana Parishad. In 1970, “Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu” was elected a member of the provincial council from West Patia and Anwara in the general election. He was one of the reformers of the 1972 constitution. He was elected Member of the Provincial Council (MPA) in 1970. In that context, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury became a member of the Bangladesh People’s Assembly formed in 1972 and played a significant role in drafting the constitution of Bangladesh. After independence in 1986 Akhtaruzzaman was elected Member of Parliament. He was also re-elected as a Member of Parliament in 1991 and 2009 due to his qualifications and skills. After independence, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu changed into an elected president of the South District Awami League.


Liberation War of ’71

Year ‘1975’


5.1 Bangabandhu’s assassination- 4 years after the great war of liberation, millions of tears came to the soil of Bengal. Bangabandhu, the great leader of Bengal, was assassinated in 1975 in his own family. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu did not stop there. He was a very active person in politics as well as in business. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a hit businessman and entrepreneur. Similarly to politics before independence, he set up a manufacturing facility referred to as Royal enterprise on Batali road. Similarly to his personal manufacturing unit, he also looked after his elder brother’s factories. He later built various organizations with his own hard work and qualifications. Some of the organizations he has formed are – Asif Steel Mill, Javed Steel Mill, Asif Synthetic, Pan Mango Vegetable, Afroza Oil Mill, Bengal Synthetic Products etc. Vanguard Steel Mill purchased synthetic resin products and founded the Zaman Industrial Group in the first two decades of independence in northern Bangladesh. Moreover, he bought a foreign-owned Aramit Mill and built it on his own.

He was also involved in many charitable works.




This great leader is not among us today. He passed away 6 years ago today but his lack is still felt by everyone and will be felt forever. His lack is absolutely irreplaceable.
