Only a few people choose politics as a noble opportunity to serve humankind. The incentive of being a part of welfare activities builds their leadership characteristics. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was one of the respected politicians of our country. This kind-hearted leader and visionary politician flourished his life with many activities.

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu Was a Dynamic Politician

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu had devoted himself for politics since he was young. He had a firm idea about politics because he was involved in political activities when he was in high school. In 1965, he started managing his elder brother’s business after completing his studies from abroad. He joined the Awami League in 1967 due to his passion for politics and the motherland. From then, he started his career as a politician professionally and permanently. 

As soon as he entered politics, he got elected as a member of the “Halidhar Union Parishad” in 1967.  In 1970, he was elected a Member of the Provincial Council (MPA) and soon became a famous politician. His skills and kind nature made him distinctive from others. 

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a front-line organizer of our great liberation war. His keen mind helped to assemble every difficult chore perfectly. When the non-cooperation movement took place, he accomplished activities of the warfare committee. After the declaration of independence by Bangabandhu, it was tough to broadcast it everywhere. He took the responsibility and aired that message around, including ‘Shonar Bangla Betar Kendra’ from his Jupiter House, Patharghata. 

During the liberation war, he extended his hands towards the needy people. He was a member of the Relief and Rehabilitation Committee of the temporary Mujibnagar Government. He visited India to look after the Bangladeshi immigrants and helped them. He also visited different parts of Europe and America to gather worldwide opinion. He was one of the foremost influencers who were able to manage challenging activities during the war. 

In 1975, exact after four years of independence, every member of the Bangabandhu family was brutally murdered. The foundation of the Awami League heavily trembled, and things went into chaos. That very moment of uncertainty, Akhtaruzzaman Babu remained calm and tried to maintain stability. He contacted the leaders and workers of the party and upheld the strength. 

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a successful Businessman 

The favorite leader of Chittagong was a prosperous entrepreneur. He set off a factory called Boyle Industry on Batali Road before independence. Then he expanded his business and established lots of industries. His focus shifted to left-out foreign sectors, and so he bought Vanguard Steel Mill and Synthetic Resin Products. With a vision to launch foreign products in our country and established Zaman Industrial Group. He also purchased a foreign-owned Armit Mill and inaugurated it on a solid foundation. 

He took the initiative to strengthen the private banking sector in Bangladesh. He founded the second private bank of our country- United Commercial Bank Limited (UCBL). He was re-elected the founding chairman in 2011 and held the position till death. 


Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu is not only a name but also an icon for all. His noble motive and politeness created a massive impression on the hearts of ordinary people. He served his country and society courageously. He was a true patriot, a democratic politician, as well as a legendary businessman. People will forever remember his widespread long-term contribution with great respect.
