Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was an eminent politician who belonged to the Bangladesh Awami League, one of the major political parties of Bangladesh. As a member of the ‘Jatiya Sangsad’, he served as a representative for the Chittagong-12 Constituency. An intellectual leader with a strong character and exceptional qualities with particular ethics and virtues, he had an everlasting love for his country and its people.

Akhtaruzzaman Babu was a true patriot who always worked for his country. He born and raised in an aristocratic family in Chittagong and had spent most of his life there. One of the most notable contributions to his country was his role as a freedom fighter in the Great Liberation War of Bangladesh. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a politician who was against corruption and an industrialist who contributed greatly to the economy and the banking sector of Bangladesh.

Babu always seemed to be attracted to Politics which is why he was engaged in politics from a very young age which helped him become a prominent politician years later. Being a follower of The Father of Our Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Babu acknowledged all his ideals and principles. Akhtaruzzaman Babu’s journey began in 1970 when he organized the “Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra” in Chittagong during the liberation war and was also appointed as Provincial Assembly for East Pakistan from Anwara-West Patia. He was also one of those who led the historic Chittagong movement. He played a huge role in organizing the Awami League after 1975. Later in 1977, he was elected President of the South Chittagong District unit of the Awami League, a position he held till his demise in 2012. He was elected three times as a Bangladesh Awami League candidate in the Parliament from Chittagong-12 in 1986, 1991, and 2008. He was always against the concept of violent politics, and to him, politics was the means of greater human welfare. So, he devoted himself to work for the wellbeing of his country and its people.
As an Industrialist
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu is a name that is also quite popular in the business sector of Bangladesh. Babu became the founding chairman of the second private bank in Bangladesh, commonly known as United Commercial Bank, and he is also the founder of Aramit Group. He made the United Commercial Bank one of the most successful banks of Bangladesh. He contributed vastly to the industrial sector of Bangladesh as he was also appointed as the leader and spokesperson of the business community.
Lending a hand to the people of the Community
Babu was a very kind and caring individual who never discriminated between the poor and rich. He created job opportunities for the many jobless people in Bangladesh. He was also a part of various social activities and took part in charity events regular. He has also built various educational institutions and several madrasas, schools and colleges.
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu has become a name that almost everyone knows. All his attributions and contributions to the country and its people made him an ideal leader and an individual to which everyone should look up to. He may not present with us now, but he will always be alive in people’s hearts because of his honesty, kindness and positivity.
