From the life-story of Akhtaruzzaman Babu, it is evident that he was involved in politics and business as a youth. He gave effort and monetized the volunteer attempts at his locality. Even as a newbie, he never ran after gain and profitability from politics and industry. Rather he took risks, worked on the barriers, and continued to gather experiences of a lifetime. He never had the idea of quitting as he kept learning from mistakes. 

Babu had the inner inborn intent of helping the people around him. In his youth, he was involved in various welfare activities for the betterment of the localities in Anwara.

He was the most amicable person who did not bother about the caste, creed, and color of the people he interacted with. His selfless approach that was fed with no envy or pride, won the hearts of the people of Chittagong in no time.  All these early practices led him to get elected eventually. It was proof of the love and respect that he earned from the people since his earlier life.

His involvement in politics kept flowing in the post-war period as well. As a member of the parliament for several years and in the ministry of the 9th national parliament, Akhtaruzzaman Babu was entrusted with significant roles. The comparatively early involvements are the reasons that uplifted his position in society and politics. 

 

  •  Sow the seeds of investment while nobody else does:

Akhtaruzzman Chowdhury Babu practiced business in his youth as well. He pioneered the business practice in Industry since the early 60s. His intent to involve in Industry started before the liberation war and continued over for decades as we know. Starting from 1965, he established Boyle Industry after having confronted the apparent boundaries and beating the odds.

Later on, he established Asif Steel Mill, Javed Steel Mill, Asif Synthetic, Panam Vegetable, Afroza Oil Mill, Bengal Synthetic Products, and many more. After Independence, he shifted his attention to the left out foreign mills. He purchased Vanguard Steel Mill and Synthetic Resin Products. The foreign-owned Armit Mill too was bought and reinforced by him.

He started buying new industrial mills left dead for years and managed to operate them in full swing. The investors of his time felt optimistic to invest and followed his lead. That is how Akhtaruzzaman Babu influenced the capitalist community. For his motivational activities, they chose to come forward and take part in developing the then newly born country – Bangladesh.

 

  • Confront courageously  and do not bow down to a critical situation:

Akhtaruzzaman Babu had been facing complexities and crises for most of this life since he got involved in politics at a very early age. However, he never backed out from his liabilities; instead, he shouldered more duties and carried them out that seemed impossible for the time being.

When the message of  Bangabandhu first arrived in Chittagong, Akhtaruzzaman Babu was entrusted with organizing accommodation for undelayable broadcasting. Since he was a member of the Struggle Committee, he took the responsibility and assisted with the team to air the message countrywide.

Bangladesh confronted several political crises right in the first decade of independence. This led to controversies and the then political leaders were divided among themselves. Their conspiracy resulted in a brutal massacre of Bangabandhu and his entire family.

After that, the leaders of the League felt threatened. They restrained themselves from actively participating. However, Akhtaruzzaman Babu kept his cool and took the action of risking his life. Although his activities awaited inevitable imprisonment, he never restrained himself from getting things done at the right time.

The assassination of the Bangabandhu family in 1975, shook the foundation of the Awami League. In these critical times, Babu kept contact with the leaders and workers of the Awami League. His actions helped reorganize the party. 

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu also protested with the anti-authoritarian movement. He also raised his voice against the unfair laws which led him to participate in the Chittagong movement in the ‘90s.

 

  • Dream as if there is no limit:

Akhtaruzzaman Babu envisioned the potentials and scopes of development in Bangladesh. He pioneered the investment in Industry since the early 60s. His intent to involve in Industry started before the liberation war and continued over for decades as we know. Akhtaruzzaman Babu pursued financial and economic progress in parallel with industrial business. United Commercial Bank Limited, also known as UCBL is a reputed private bank in our country. But very few of us know that the bank was founded by Akhtaruzzaman Babu after independence. He was the founding chairman of the 2nd earliest private bank in Bangladesh.

 

  • Prioritize the sake of your motherland:

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu nurtured a profound sense of accountability to the country. He acted as if the betterment of the people was his moral duty. He was an active youth of his community with voluntary works. His records are flourished with remarkable achievements and scholarships. After the completion of his secondary school education, he got admitted to Notre Dame College in Dhaka.

Later, he got admitted to Illinois University of Science and Technology, the US with a scholarship. He studied business administration at New York University as well. He took an oath to serve his motherland against which the luxurious life abroad couldn’t gain on him. He returned to Bangladesh in December 1968 after completing an associate degree from New York University.

In his latter stages of life, while pursuing business and politics, He did not leave the country and chose to live the rest of his life in Bangladesh. 

 

  • Never hesitate to contribute to welfare works from your savings:

Nowadays, most of the people in politics solely depend on the state fundings or the monetary privileges they get from the Party. Exploitation and unfair sanctions too are not uncommon as an underground practice. Akhtaruzzaman Babu was far away from all those unfair means. And on top of that, it was later on revealed that he shouldered the financial liabilities at times.

Whenever the Party faced an unprecedented scarcity or a voluntary program was about to be postponed due to insufficient funding, AKhtaruzzaman Babu expended money from his own savings. He never expected any return or refund. Rather, he seemed contentment in seeing the welfare projects carried on successfully by his benevolent contribution.

 

  • Practice modesty, no matter what:

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury never took pride in himself even after becoming one of the affluent industrialists in Bangladesh. Rather, people were amazed at his humble behavior. He was a ‘People’s man’ and always preferred being regarded as the people’s leader. The appreciation and love of mass people are the most envious achievement that Akhtaruzzaman Babu cherished throughout his life.
