Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was an enlightened person who sacrificed himself for the welfare of our country and to uplift the respect, pride, values of our country. He was a prominent politician and social worker who had worked for the Bangladesh Awami League party. He was also a former Member of Parliament representing the Chittagong-12 constituency of the Jatiya Sangsad. Not only in politics but also in the business and industrial sectors, his support for the common people of this country was undeniable. He had also established some organizations, industrial sectors and banks, contributing to the welfare of this country, which will be remembered forever.

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu organized the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra which, has become memorable in history for forming a public opinion for the liberation war of 1971 and for providing inspiration to the freedom fighters. Besides, Bangabandhu’s declaration of independence was also read from here. As a result, the general public became aware of the liberation war and, the news of the liberation war reached outside of the country.
Founder of the United Commercial Bank Limited:
Babu founded the United Commercial Bank Limited and made it one of the successful banks in Bangladesh. He had always worked to eliminate the problem of unemployment in Bangladesh. For this reason, he set up this bank with those in mind who want to get rid of their unemployment through some small business such as cottage industries, small factories. Here, all those people were given loans to start a business. He undertook many activities and worked hard to make this bank successful. Now, this bank one of the most successful banks in Bangladesh.

Not only a politician but also Babu was a successful businessman and an industrialist. He had worked tirelessly for the economic development of this country. He played a pioneering role in establishing the private banking sectors in Bangladesh. Before independence, he set up a factory called Boyle Industry on Batali Road. Later, He built many industries such as Asif Steel Mill, Javed Steel Mill, Asif Synthetic, Panam Vegetable, Afroza Oil Mill, Bengal Synthetic Products etc. He purchased Vanguard Steel Mill and Synthetic Resin Products. Later. He established the Zaman Industrial Group after the Liberation War. He bought a foreign company called Aramit Mill and turned it into a reliable company.
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu played an important role as the business leader of the country’s business community. He was elected president twice in a row of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce. In 1988, he was the president of the FBCCI, which is the country’s top business organization. Besides, he served as president of the OIC Chamber of Commerce. He established many madrasas, mosques, schools, colleges in Anwara and west Patiya in Chittagong. He was also involved in many charitable and social works. He had worked till his death for the economic development of Bangladesh.
