Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was an ideal leader, a businessman and an industrialist. And more importantly, he was a great patriot. In his entire life, he showed his love for the country in many ways. He became an excellent example of patriotism. Today we’ll know about his heroic deeds as a patriot. 

About Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu 

Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was born in 1945. His father’s name was Nuruzzaman Chowdhury, who was both a lawyer and a landlord. His mother’s name was Khorsheda Begum. In 1956, Akhtaruzzaman Babu passed matriculation and got admitted to Dhaka Notre Dame College. He studied business administration at New York University after that. He returned to the country in December 1984 with an associate’s degree.

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was elected a member of the Dakkhin Zila Chhatra League in 1956. Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury was widely known for his position as the president of the South Chittagong District unit of the Bangladesh Awami League. He was selected for the post in 1977 and served as the president till his death. 

He was also a former member of the Jatiya Sangsad and represented the Chittagong-12 constituency. Not only as a politician, but Mr Babu was successful also as a businessman. He was the founder and chairman of the United Commercial Bank Limited (UCBL). In 1989, he was elected vice-chairman of the 77th Jati group. He’s the only Bangladeshi who’s been selected for that position.

His Contributions During The Liberation War: 

When the cooperation movement was taking place, Mr Babu conducted works of the conflict committee from his Jupiter residence in Patharghata despite his life being at risk.

Akhtaruzzaman became a member of the Bangladesh People’s Assembly, formed in 1972. He played an essential role in drafting the constitution of Bangladesh.

Mr Akhtaruzzaman also participated in the anti-authoritarian movement in the eighties. He was tortured for protesting against the dictatorship.

Even after four years of independence, when Bangabandhu was murdered, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury extended his helping hand and maintained contact with the leaders and workers of the party. He played an essential part in the revival and reorganisation of the party. As a recognition of his contributions, he was given “The Independence Award” in 2021. 

Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra:

Mr Babu organised Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra in Chittagong during the liberation war. The declaration of independence was sent all over the country from his residence through Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. 

Contributions to Chittagong:

Mr Babu, as the president of the South Chittagong District unit of Awami League, used his parliamentary rights to develop Chittagong. His developments were not about infrastructure only. He also solidified many people’s lives from scratch. He invested in solid development projects that would last longer. That’s why the people of Chittagong loved him and they still mourn his loss. He achieved eternal love and respect from his supporters. 

Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu always contributed to the country’s development. He always cared about his country and its people and kept working for its development. Therefore, Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu set an amazing yet simple example of patriotism. The people of this country will never forget his contributions and he’ll always be alive in our hearts and minds.
