Overview:

The highest state award given by Bangladesh Government is the Swadhinata Padak or Independence Award. This award is given to Bangladeshi citizens and organisations for their contribution to the country. Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, the Bangladesh Awami League Politician, received this award in 2021. Today we’ll discuss his significant contributions and his achievements throughout the 75 years of his life. 

Professional Achievements:

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, along with being an Awami League Politician, was a former Jatiya Sangsad member. He became the president of the South Chittagong District unit of Awami League in 1977 and held that position till his death. He also was the founder chairman of United Bank Ltd.

Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra:

Mr Babu organised Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra in Chittagong during the liberation war. The declaration of independence was sent all over the country from his residence through Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. 

Contributions During The Liberation War:

When the cooperation movement was taking place, Mr Babu conducted works of the conflict committee from his Jupiter residence in Patharghata despite his life being at risk. Even after four years of independence, when Bangabandhu was murdered in 1977, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury extended his helping hand and maintained contact with the leaders and workers of the party. He played an essential part in the revival and reorganisation of the party. As a recognition of his contributions, he was given “The Independence Award” in 2021. 

Contributions to Chittagong:

Mr Babu, as the president of the South Chittagong District unit of Awami League, used his parliamentary rights to develop Chittagong. His developments were not about infrastructure only. He also solidified many people’s lives from scratch. He invested in solid development projects that would last longer. That’s why the people of Chittagong loved him and they still mourn his loss. He achieved eternal love and respect from his supporters. 

Achievements As A Businessman:

Ms Babu was quite successful as a businessman. He founded United Commercial Bank Ltd. (UCBL), the 2nd private bank in the country and made it one of Bangladesh’s most successful banks. He was a leading entrepreneur of the port city. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was also the former chairman of Aramit Group. Mr Babu also worked as the president of the OIC chamber of Commerce. He was elected vice-chairman of the 77th Jati group. He’s the only Bangladeshi who’s been selected for that position. 

Achievements As A Human Being:

Mr Babu was not only a great political leader. He was also a human with good ethics and principles. Despite being so successful as a political leader and businessman, he was down to earth. Mr Babu established multiple mosques, madrasas and school colleges in Chittagong. He was involved in many charitable works. His vows were inspired by humanity. 

Conclusion:

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was the ideal political leader, industrialist and also human. He was honest, generous and caring. He cared for the people of his country. He worked for the betterment of the country all his life. It’s not surprising that he’s loved by the whole nation. He indeed won as a human being and his most significant achievement would be the unending love and respect from his followers.
