The world today knows the politics that got polluted by gushes of money and unformidable bias priorities. It is an irony that today’s politics keep almost no attachment to morals. Politicians nowadays mostly are in the business of validating their selfishness with another superior moral justification.
But a very few people exist who choose politics as an opportunity to serve. The drive of being a part of welfare activities build their leadership qualities and get them involved in consequence. Akhtaruzzaman Babu is one of the very few revered politicians who worked for the people in the pursuit of meaningfulness. The politics he exercised showed the unique sense he had and the keen insight of keeping a balance between achievement and collateral trade-offs. He is an ideal example for those who are involved in politics.
The work-life of Akhtaruzzaman Babu is full of political involvement and accomplishments. He left for us an epitome of criteria – how and what politics should be. He who preferred being a People’s Leader has had the revelation of a positive politician; the one with goodwill and affluence.
Akhtaruzzaman Babu did not only possess an exquisite vision of politics but was also a thoughtful strategy maker. There is a lot to learn about political strategy from his life and enhance them with the intent of goodwill. To build a unique perspective like Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, the path taken by him is to be followed; A path that is destined to the beam of light that awaits a struggling journey in the dark. Indeed, no effort and hard work are futile as long as the strategy remains off the fault.
The earlier, The better:
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was involved in politics and business at a very early stage. He did not lose his opportunities as a Youth and participated actively as much as possible. He started contributing and monetized the volunteer efforts as well. Since the very beginning, he never ran after gain and profitability from politics or industry. Rather he took his chances, worked on the barriers, and continued to gather an enormous amount of experience.
He learned from the mistakes, yet never had the idea of quitting at the back of his head. His endeavor was coupled with his pursuit of progress and development of our motherland.
Make the best out of Sociability:
Akhtaruzzaman Babu had the inborn ability to socialize. The amicability he had with his fellow people was worthy of appreciation. He became a trusted figure in his hometown – Anwara, Chittagong. As he became well known for his voluntary welfare works, he earned the credibility of the common people at a very early age.
His selfless motive in benevolent acts was transparent enough to see and create a positive impression in the hearts of mass people. Akhtaruzzaman Babu became a man who was reliable and trustworthy to both his peers and others. All these early practices eventually led him to get elected to the East Pakistan provincial assembly in 1970. This could happen because of the love and respect he had from the people from the very beginning.
A leader signs up for all the risks ahead:
Akhtaruzzaman Babu was one of the organizers of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra in Chittagong. On the eve of the liberation war, the non-cooperation movement was on the run. By the initiative taken by the struggle committee, the message of Bangabandhu was broadcast first after it arrived in Chittagong.
It was a night of disaster; the West Pakistani regiment attacked the innocent civilians at midnight. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibar Rahman was arrested around the same time. In that critical moment, while every second was invaluable, the Leader of the nation’s message was received. It was Akhtaruzzaman Babu who risked his life and let the message be aired from his residence. Thus the country and its people came to know that the war is imminent and there was no other way other than striking back.
The critical times are the best evaluator:
“Politics is the art of looking for trouble,” says Ernest Benn. Akhtaruzzaman’s political life was no different. Since Akhtaruzzaman Babu was involved in politics at an early age, he had been facing complexities and crises for most of this life. Even his voluntary attempts in welfare are not as rosy as it would seem.
However, Akhtaruzzaman Babu never backed out from his responsibilities; instead, he took more labilities on his shoulders and carried out the seemingly impossible tasks at the most critical times. He had a team player strategy in mind and could bring his peers under a positive influence.
Ironman-ing can be table-turning:
The political crises arose in a different direction after the independence of our country. The heroes of the war divided among themselves with different ideologies that led to controversies. An unhealthy enmity was given birth, conspiracies went on… together they resulted in the bloodbath of 1975.
Every member of the Bangabandhu family was brutally murdered and the foundation of the Awami League was heavily shaken. While things went into chaos and uncertainty, Akhtaruzzaman Babu kept his cool and contacted the other members of the party. Risking his life and swallowing the threat of jail confinement, he played his role as a loyal politician. His activities in that critical time helped to unify the panicking members and face the enemies as well.
The toughest mission and the worthiest achievement is to conquer the heart:
The indomitable stimulus for Akhtaruzzaman to involve in politics was the betterment of his fellow people. With an intent this pure, all of his works, attempts, and actions reflected goodwill that never went unseen. Akhtaruzzaman Babu had the most amicable conduct with the people of all caste, class, and creed. He was friendly to his peers, as well as the people of the society despite being from an affluent family.
His selfless motive and humbleness soon depicted him as a people’s leader. He was a reliable leader who provided shelter, support, and shouldered responsibilities at critical times. As a guardian figure in the political field and pioneer, Akhtaruzzaman Babu created a massive impression over the hearts of common people. The love and respect that earned from the mass people were considered the best achievement by him.
A leader is a multi-tasker of a wide range:
Akhtaruzzaman Babu never settled for a single assigned task. Rather he managed multiple issues combinedly that had a simultaneous effect on one another. It is the best quality of a leader to organize the internal chaos and converge them into one single objective. When the war of Independence started, AKhtaruzzaman Babu went to India and took an oath to work as a part of the Mujibnagar government.
He carried out important duties of the relief and rehabilitation committee. In addition, Akhtaruzzaman Babu was chosen as a delegate to represent Bangladesh during the liberation war. He traveled to different countries to create awareness and global opinion. Through his toil along with the team of delegates, the sacrifice of the liberation war soldiers was taken into account as a distress alarm.
After independence, Mr. Chowdhury did not only serve as a democratic leader but also as an important placeholder of the party. Along with his duties as a member of the parliament, he motivated and guided the fellow members of the Awami League. He was a strategic team player who could work out the inconveniences in the most optimized manner.
Sacrificial & Monetary Contribution:
Akhtaruzzaman Babu’s politics was not the one inclined with worldly gains. Rather, he managed the drawbacks and filled in the insufficiencies from his own pocket. It is been said that Akhtaruzzaman Babu has shouldered the financial burden for the sake of people and parties several times.
He never hesitated to sponsor an event of benevolence with good potential. He knew that time is money and the monetary need for grabbing the opportunity is a chance by itself.
Through the eyes of a civilian:
It is said that a leader is a king and a servant of a team at the same time. Indeed, leading is no easy work. One needs to see through dual perspectives to get the hunch of the dreams of the common people and their complaints as well. An ideal leader like AKhtaruzzaman Babu could bridge the gap between civilian and lawmaker perspectives.
Since he got along with common people, he could simulate their thoughts and act accordingly. He placed himself in the shoes of a civilian before rendering his opinion on behalf of them. As a democratic leader, he was entrusted with decision-making on behalf of the people.
This is why he regarded leadership as a sacred duty bound with trust, honesty, and empathy. Taking the views of common people into account, AKhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu proved to be a politician worthy to be followed; and a leader worthy to be chosen.
