Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a great political leader. He had good ethics and principles. He was the type of leader who’d genuinely care for the people of his country. Today we’re going to briefly learn about this patriotic man.

  • Who Is Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu?

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was born on 1 May, 1945. He was elected a member of the Dakkhin Zila Chhatra League in 1956.. He also represented the Chittagong-12 vicinity later. Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was widely known for his position as the president of the South Chittagong District Unit of the Bangladesh Awami League. He was selected for the post in 1977 and served as the president till his death.

  • Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu’s Family 

Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu’s father’s name was Nuruzzaman Chowdhury. He was both a lawyer and a landlord. Babu’s mother’s name was Khorsheda Begum. Even though Mr Babu was from a wealthy family, he was always down to earth. He didn’t have an ego. 

  • Educational Life

Akhtaruzzaman Babu passed matriculation in 1956 from Patia High School and got into Dhaka Notre Dame College in the same year. During that time, he received a scholarship to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States. After that, he studied business administration at New York University. He returned to the country in 1984 with an associate’s degree. 

  • His Contributions To The Country 

During the great liberation war in 1971, Mr Babu conducted the works of the conflict committee from his residence. The news of independence was spread through Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, which he organised.

Akhtaruzzaman became a member of the Bangladesh People’s Assembly, formed in 1972. He played an essential role in drafting the constitution of Bangladesh.

Mr Akhtaruzzaman also participated in the anti-authoritarian movement in the eighties. He was tortured for protesting against the dictatorship.

Also, after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was murdered, Mr Babu played an important role in reorganising the Awami League. 

And even after the independence, when Mr Babu was selected as the president of the South Chittagong District Unit of Awami League, Mr Babu kept contributing to the country. He used his parliamentary rights to develop many places of Chittagong. He also solidified many people’s lives from scratch. He invested in solid development projects that would last longer. So that it would benefit the mass people for a long time. As a recognition of his contributions, he was given “The Independence Award” in 2021. 

  • Mr Babu As A Businessman: 

Mr. Babu was quite successful as a businessman. He founded United Commercial Bank Limited, the 2nd private bank in the country and made it one of Bangladesh’s most successful banks. 

He was a leading entrepreneur of the port city. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was also the former chairman of Aramit Group.

Mr Babu also worked as the president of the OIC chamber of Commerce. He was elected vice-chairman of the 77th Jati group. He’s the only Bangladeshi who’s been selected for that position. 

Mr Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, from  the moment he got into power till his death, he always worked for the betterment of the country. And that’s why he’s still remembered with respect and love in our hearts. Mr Babu will always be an ideal political leader.
