A person never really dies as long as others remember him or her. It is their memory that preserves the essence of their deeds and existence. Leaving an irreplaceable mark is not always the easiest thing for one to do, so it is not erasing the memory of that person. Akhtaruzzaman was a man who took each breath for his country even till the last days. His contributions, kindness and love are what we shall forever hold onto ourselves.

The love we didn’t deserve but received

Although the goal was to become a proper politician, Akhtaruzzaman Babu’s responsibility and love towards his country inspired him. He served as a Bangladeshi delegate and a member of the relief and rehabilitation programme during the Liberation War. His participation tremendously helped the Bangladeshi immigrants and freedom fighters.

After the war, in 1975, the assassination of the Bangabandhu family increased political risks and death threats. Despite that, Akhtaruzzaman contacted Awami League members and revived the political party- ‘Awami League’ to restore balance. Besides being a political representative, he took part in protests while leading the Chittagong movement in the eighties. Consequently, he was tortured in jail for his participation. The contribution against oppression to maintain democracy reflects the values Akharuzzaman Babu had.

Age is just a Number

Akhtaruzzaman was a very ambitious kid who strongly knew what he wanted to become. Ever since being a kid, his determination to become a politician kept driving him to do better. He got closely involved in politics during his secondary school after becoming an elected member of the Dakshin Zila Chhatra League in 1958.

Moreover, even before the Liberation War, he was an elected member of the East Pakistan Assembly. While it could have been somewhat overwhelming for others, it gave Akhtaruzzaman Babu a befitting perspective on the political state before and after the war. Most importantly, it enabled him to deduce what should be done to bring back peace and order. Babu will forever remain an example and inspiration to the younger generation.

Contributions as an Entrepreneur and Industrialist

Among many other things, Akhtaruzzaman has taught us to keep striving. That our goals can grow along with us too. Alongside politically succeeding, he made a tremendous impact on the country’s economy by joining the world of business

  • Founded Zaman Industrial Group
  • Founder of United Commercial Bank, creating the foundation of the private banking sector of Bangladesh
  • Received worldwide recognition as a businessman

If Kindness was a Person

Akhtaruzzaman Babu was the man who lent a hand whenever possible. He believed in sharing one’s success with others. That is why people remember him so well to this day. He built several mosques, colleges, madrasas and engaged in numerous charity works. Furthermore, he unhesitantly financed several political projects in times of emergency. Therefore, if kindness were a person, it would undoubtedly have been Akhtaruzzaman Babu.

We will find ourselves staring at a war-torn struggling country with poor economic sustainability if we look back. However, if we look at ourselves now, the image is admiringly different. It is Akhtaruzzaman who helped build this beautiful picture of a country prospering with growth and peace. Other than economic and political contributions, he contributed to inspiring us as well as believing in ourselves.
