So those who do these good deeds become forever memorable. They live forever in the minds of people. They get dignity at the highest level of honor. Today we are going to talk about a man who is still alive in the minds of people even after his death. Who has never been unfaithful to his country and nation? Who was an ideal of honesty and devotion? We are talking about Mr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, A great leader of Bangladesh, businessman, and social worker with courage, strength, and prudent judgment.

A Great Leader

Speaking of great leaders, we can give many examples like Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque etc. There is no shortage of great people in Bangladesh. Millions of great leaders have given their all for their country and nation. It is not possible for everyone to take a special place in the crowd of millions of great leaders. In the same way, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu did this impossible task. He has made a special place for himself in the crowd of thousands of great leaders. When it comes to great leaders, the name of Chowdhury Babu must come in everyone’s mouth. Because of his good deeds, he was becoming everyone’s idol and favorite face.

He was always the first in the misfortune of Bangladesh. Whenever a country or a nation was in trouble, he extended a helping hand. Performed unforgettable deeds during the war. Akhtaruzzaman Babu was hailed when the great leaders of the Awami League were mentioned. He has done a lot for Awami League from his disobedient attitude towards Awami League.He has done a lot of welfare work for his own land Chittagong. He has helped thousands of poor people. He was always by the side of helpless people. Besides being a good leader, he was also an ideal father. He raised his children to be honest.

Born & Parents

Akhtaruzzaman was born in a very basic family. He was from a rich family. When Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was born, at that time no one thought that someday this little

boy would make the name of Bengal bright, who would make Bengal proud. “Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu” was born in the village of Anwara Haildhar. The time was May 1, 1945.  His father’s name was Nuruzzaman Chowdhury, who was a lawyer by profession and was also a zamindar in his own area. His mother’s name was Khorsheda Begum, who was a housewife. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu grew up behind the care of his parents.


He always expressed his love and affection for his family. He was married to Nur Nahar Zaman, the second daughter of the late Alhaj Sirajul Islam Chowdhury of Boalkhali Upazila in Chittagong. He is the father of 3 sons and 4 daughters in his personal life. He did his best to do what a father needs to do. He fulfilled his role as an ideal father. He established his family by educating his children. His sons and daughters are – Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, Farhana Zaman Chowdhury, Asifuzzaman Chowdhury, Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, Nina Kawrajaki Zaman Chowdhury, Roxana Zaman Chowdhury, and Afroza Zaman Chowdhury. This great leader was quite happy with his lovable family.


Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a very talented student. His love for the study was on a different level. He passed secondary from Patia High School in 1956. He loved politics from his youth so he must need to say that he was elected as a member of the “Dakshin Zila Student League” in 1958 while he was studying in secondary school. Then in the same year, he was admitted to a very popular and well-established Notre Dame College in Dhaka. While in the intermediate class, he received a scholarship for his talents and skills, which led to his admission to the University of Science and Technology in Illinois, USA. Then he continued his studies at the Business Administration at New York University. After finishing his studies, he proudly returned to his homeland in December 1974 with an associate’s degree. After completing his studies and returning home, he joined the business with his elder brother in 1975.

Beginning Of Politics

Then It was a time when he was beginning his political journey. He was the elected chairman of Haildhar Union Parishad from 1967 to 1975. Even after independence, he was the chairman of Haildhar Union Parishad and chairman of Thana Parishad. By The Way In 1970, “Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu” was elected a member of the provincial council from West Patia and Anwara in the general election. Then a Dark period came in the heart of Bengal. The war of liberation started exactly after this year, In 1971.

In ‘Liberation War’ (1971)

One of the organizers of the liberation war of 1971 was our brave leader Alhaj Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu. When the non-cooperation movement was going on the eve of the liberation war, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury conducted the activities of the struggle committee from his Jupiter House in Patharghata. After the declaration of independence by Bangabandhu came to Chittagong, it was cyclostyled from Akhtaruzzaman’s Jupiter House. The declaration of independence was sent everywhere from Akhtaruzzaman’s own residence to “Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra”.

Activities During ‘War’

When the war of liberation started, he flew to India. While there, he performed various duties of the expatriate Bangladesh government. Among various good deeds, he was an honest and ideal member of the ” Relief and Rehabilitation Committee” of the Mujibnagar government. He traveled to foreign and visited various parts of Europe and America in order to build world public opinion with the people of the world. He first went to London. From there, Akhtaruzzaman left for the United States as a member of the Bangladesh delegation led by Justice Abu Saeed Chowdhury. 

Murder Of Father Of The Nation

He was also one of the reformers of the 1972 constitution. He was elected Member of the Provincial Council (MPA) in 1970. In that context, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury became a member of the Bangladesh People’s Assembly formed in 1972 and played a significant role in drafting the constitution of Bangladesh.

Exactly 4 years after the war of liberation, millions of tears came to the soil of Bengal. Bangabandhu, the great leader of Bengal, was assassinated in 1975 in his own family. So Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu risked his life to maintain contact with the leaders and workers of the party and later played a courageous role in the revival and reconstruction of the party.

‘Babu’ Never Betray With The Nation

Akhtaruzzaman Babu is a man who has never been selfish with the Awami League. He never betrayed the country, the soil of the country, and the people of the country. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu never deceived the people who were made of Bangabandhu’s pride, arrogance, and blood. He has given his best for the country. He had a lot of respect for the Awami League. He has done a lot for this league that will never be forgotten.

Akhtaruzzaman has been active in various activities since the beginning of the war of liberation. He joined the team to fight against the enemies as he had love, affection, and patriotism for the country. How much can a man do for his country? As much as possible, it is recorded in the pages of history. This great leader of ours has done exactly what the whole world remembers him for his courageous good deeds.

During the ’80s

In the ’80s the Anti-Authoritarian movement was started. In This movement, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was also included. He played a very strong role in the anti-authoritarian movement. There are great leaders in history who have been imprisoned for doing good for their country. Because good people have more enemies. He was tortured while protesting against the dictatorship. This great leader did not hesitate to go to jail for his country. He is the only Bangladeshi who has been elected Vice-Chairman of  A prestigious international organization. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu also played an important role as the spokesperson and business leader of the business community of the country. He was the President of the Chittagong Chamber for two terms. He also served as President of the OIC Chamber of Commerce. In 1989, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the “77 Jati Group”. After independence in 1986, Akhtaruzzaman was elected Member of Parliament.

A Magnetic Businessman

Not just a politician, he was a businessman. He was a very active person in business as well as politics. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a successful businessman and industrialist. In addition to politics before independence, he set up a factory called Royal Industry on Batali Road. In addition to his own factory, he also looked after his elder brother’s factories. Later he built various institutions with his hard work and qualifications. His biggest contribution is today’s “United Commercial Bank”, many call it UCB Bank. He has played a very important role in pioneering the establishment of the private banking sector in Bangladesh. He is the founder and founding chairman of United Commercial Bank Limited (UCBL), the second-largest private bank in the country. He was re-elected chairman of the bank in 2011 and held the post until his death.

Social Works/Charity

He is a founding member of many school colleges in Anwara West Patiyar and Chittagong. He was also involved in many charitable works. He has done very important work for society and the people of the society. He took initiative to establish many mosques, madrasas, and school colleges in Anwara and West Patiya of Chittagong and he established them successfully. He established Anwara Degree College, Haildhar Basharuzzaman Memorial Education Center, Barumchhara Shaheed Basharuzzaman High School, Anwara Judges Chandra Memorial Trust, JHBS High School, and many more schools, colleges, and madrasas.

Death Of The Leader

No one can say when or where death comes from. This death thing is not left to anyone. One day or another everyone will have to die.

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, a brave and ideal leader, passed away on November 4, 2012, at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore due to kidney complications. Chittagong-12 (Anwara) MP and ruling Awami League presidium member Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu passed away on Sunday morning. Three more janazas were scheduled to be held on November 8 at the Jamaatul Falah National Mosque in Chittagong, at the AJ Chowdhury ground in Patiya at 12 noon, and at the Anwara High School ground at 2.30 pm. Four more janaza prayers were held at the Chowdhury High School ground in Haildhar, Anwar. He was then buried in his family cemetery. Meanwhile, President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep grief over his death. In a condolence message, Zillur Rahman said -The country has lost a veteran politician and social worker. He also said his contribution to national development will be unforgettable.

Chowdhury Babu ‘A Dignified Pioneer’

A man who has never betrayed his country and nation, who has spent his whole life in the interest of the people, is not among us today. He passed away 8 years ago but his lack is still felt by everyone and will be felt forever. His lack is absolutely irreplaceable. It is very difficult to find people like him in today’s world. What Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury has done as an ideal leader is never to be forgotten. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu had all the qualities that an honest and ideal politician and social worker should have. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a patriot from head to toe, he was a field worker on the way to build Bangabandhu’s golden Bengal. He was a patriot and his only goal was to build the golden Bengal of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and People’s Leader Sheikh Hasina. 

We Love You “Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu”

Chowdhury Babu had a soft heart and a generous mind to love people. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a pioneer in building a secular Bangladesh in the spirit of the liberation war. He is one of the rare post-independence politicians who took the helm of the Awami League in difficult times, did politics at his own expense. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu is a burning example of a man who lives by his deeds. Very few people can come into the world and win the hearts of all, win the love of all, live in the minds of all. The new generation has a lot to learn from the biography of Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu as a healthy and clean politician. Despite getting the opportunity to be a minister many times in his life, he did not deviate from the ideals of Bangabandhu. He was a very far-sighted and prudent politician. He was a Chittagong’s shining star.
