1) He was born and bought up in Chittagong-
Akhtaruzzaman was taken to a wealthy aristocrat Muslim family on May 01, 1945. His Father, Nuruzzaman Chowdhury, was an advocate and a landlord of Anwara Haildhor in Chittagong. Babu spent most of his life in Chittagong. Although he was from a wealthy family, he was never arrogant and prideful. Within his parliamentary rights, He developed many parts of Chittagong city. Babu has always worked for tangible development, which might be why the people of Chittagong still remember him.
2) He fought in the Liberation War of Bangladesh-
Babu organised “Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra” in Chittagong in 1970. He was also voted as Provincial Assembly for East Pakistan from Anwara-West Patia during the war. He helped build and strengthen the relationship between Bangladesh and many countries during the war. He joined the fight for freedom with his comrades and helped his country in every way he could.
3) He was always drawn towards politics-
Babu did not join politics abruptly. He entered politics at a very young age. For instance, even as a student, he was involved with Bangladesh Chhatra League. Then after the liberation war of 1975, he played a huge role in organising the Bangladesh Awami League. Then his official journey of politics began in 1977. He was elected as President of the South Chittagong District unit of the Awami League, a position he held till his death in 2012. According to Babu, politics was the means of greater human welfare and was always against corruption and violent politics. Babu was a devoted follower of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Babu followed his ideals and principles throughout his life.
4) He was a bright student-
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu has always been an intellectual individual. He completed his secondary school at Patiya High School in 1958. In the same year, he was enrolled at Dhaka Notre Dame College. Then he admitted to the Illinois University of Science and Technology in the USA with a scholarship. Afterwards, he studied business administration at New York University. After completing his studies, he came back to the country in 1968. Then he went on buying and establishing various successful ventures.
5) He was a family man-
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu married Nur Nahar Zaman. She was the second child of the late Alhaj Sirajul Islam Chowdhury of Boalkhali Upazila of Chittagong. The couple has three sons and four daughters. Babu has loved all his children equally and has raised them ideally. He has expressed affection and love for his family on many occasions. All in all, Babu was an ideal and loving husband and father.
