Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a renowned Bangladesh Awami League Politician and a freedom fighter in the Liberation war of Bangladesh. As a former ‘Jatiya Sangsad’ member, he represented the Chittagong-12 Constituency after being elected three times. Babu was born in a wealthy aristocrat family on May 1, 1945. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was born and brought up in Chittagong.

  • Born to an Aristocrat Family in Chittagong 

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was born and raised in Chittagong. He belonged to a wealthy Muslim family. His Father, Nuruzzaman Chowdhury, was an advocate and a landlord of Anwara Haildhor in Chittagong. Although he was from a wealthy family, he was never arrogant and always believed everyone to be equal. Babu was a friendly person who has worked with and for everyone without a bit of pride in him. Within his parliamentary rights, He developed many parts of the Chittagong city and has always worked for tangible development, which might be why the people of Chittagong still mourn him.

  • He was a freedom fighter in the Liberation War of Bangladesh

    During the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was appointed as Provincial Assembly for East Pakistan from Anwara-West Patia. He also organized “Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra” in Chittagong in 1970. Babu fulfilled many responsibilities as a Bangladesh delegate traveling to India and different parts of The United States and Europe to build and strengthen the relationship between Bangladesh and those countries. He gathered the help Bangladesh needed in those dire times and joined others to fight against the enemies.

  • He was a Prominent Leader 

Akhtaruzzaman was always drawn towards politics; as a student, he was involved with Bangladesh Chhatra League. Babu was a devoted follower of our Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Father and followed his ideals and principles throughout his life. After 1975 he played a huge role in organizing the Bangladesh Awami League. Later in 1977, he was appointed as President of the South Chittagong District unit of the Awami League, a position he held till his death in 2012. He was elected to Parliament as a Bangladesh Awami League in 1986, 1991, and 2008. According to Babu, politics was the means of greater human welfare, and he always stood against corruption and violent politics.

  • He was an Established Businessman 

Babu was an eminent industrialist who has established and bought several companies. For instance, he found the Zaman Industrial Group, one of the well-known business organization in the country, in the ’80s. Later he became the founding chairman of United Commercial Bank (UCB), one of the earliest private banks in Bangladesh. UCB is now known as one of the most successful banks in Bangladesh. 

  • He was engaged in social activities

    Babu never discriminated between the poor and the rich. He was always kind and considerate towards needy people. Babu has established some educational institutions and several madrasas, schools and colleges and was also associated with charities and social activities.

Although Akhtaruzzaman Babu is not with us today, we will never forget and always cherish his ideals, values, meaningful life and his countless contributions. An individual like Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu is what we now need the most.
